Officials with the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation say a major donation will be transformative.
Representatives with the Sobey Foundation announced a $1 million donation to the hospital foundation to establish new cardio-respiratory services.
The announcement was made by Frank Sobey, the chair of the Sobey Foundation, in Antigonish Monday.
After the event, Steve Smith, the chair of the hospital foundation’s endowment campaign, said the donation is very important.
“Health care is becoming more and more costly, and there’s more and more people needing it- I’m a perfect example of that,” he said. “As you get older, you start to go to the hospital for different reasons- the demographic in our area is getting older.”
Smith said they’ve raised $16.1 million, or more than 80 per cent of their $20 million goal for The Time is Now campaign.
Sobey said they had a few reasons for the donation.
“This is an exceptionally well-run hospital, I would say that’s principally the reason,” he said. “Also, we have a lot of employees that avail themselves of the services here, (and) it’s also close to our home base.”
Sobey said the foundation has three pillars- health care, education and community.
He said the hospital fits into health care and community.
