Residents of Canso have held a rally to show support for the community’s hospital and its staff members.
The Eastern Memorial Hospital closed its doors for overnight hours for the first time at 7 p.m. Sunday; it will only be staffed from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. for the time being.
Health officials have said the reason for the overnight closure is a lack of nurses.
Organizers planned a rally across from the hospital grounds to protest the reduction at 6:30 p.m., a half hour before the first closure.
They say they invited Lloyd Hines, the MLA for Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie, and municipal councillors; Janet Hazelton, the president of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, was also on hand for the demonstration.
