The new Mulroney Hall on the campus of StFX is open after two years of work.
Andrew Beckett, the university’s vice-president of finance and head of student services, says they’ll hold classes at the new building, which houses the Mulroney Institute of Government, for the first time Tuesday.
Beckett tells The Hawk there will be some small finishing touches and mechanical fine-tuning for the next couple of months until the building is totally finished.
“It’s a major construction project in the middle of campus, so for the last two years we’ve had quite a bit of disruption, but we’re getting to the final stages now,” he says. “There’ll be a few outstanding deficiencies and bits and pieces that have to be done, but for functional purposes, we’ll be up and going and operational.”
Beckett says they planned to open by June, but construction was delayed.
He says people are going to be impressed.
“We’re thrilled to be opening up the space,” he says. “I think that all people on campus are going to be pretty impressed with the space when they get a chance to go through the building- it’s pretty amazing.”
Beckett says the cost- $52 million- was slightly above budget and the project took longer than scheduled, but nothing out of the ordinary.
