Homecoming celebrations are set to get underway at StFX.
University officials say they’re celebrating their long history of women’s athletics.
Shanna Hopkins, StFX’s director of alumni affairs, tells The Hawk it’s the 50th anniversary of women’s varsity athletics at the university.
“It was 1969 when the female student-athletes from Mount Saint Bernard actually officially merged under the StFX umbrella, combining the two programs.”
Hopkins says they’re welcoming back the class of ’69 and earlier for the Golden Grad Dinner Friday.
She says they’re excited to have alumni back on campus again.
“Our alumni are our lifeblood, so having them come back and having them out in our communities talking about how great their time was at StFX, that’s why we operate (and) that’s why people keep coming back,” she says. “Our alumni are the greatest asset that we have here at the university.”
Hopkins says they’re opening the weekend with inductions into the StFX Sports Hall of Fame Thursday night.
She says the annual homecoming football game will be played under the lights Friday night; there will be a women’s rugby game Saturday afternoon.
Festivities wrap Sunday.
