Municipal officials in Inverness Co. have decided to contract out their garbage pickup.
Councillors voted to accept a tender by reps with GFL Environmental Inc. to handle solid waste collection in the municipality during December’s regular meeting Thursday afternoon.
After the meeting, Betty Ann MacQuarrie, the warden of the municipality, told The Hawk their fleet wasn’t up to the job.
“It’s long overdue for Inverness Co., because we’ve been struggling with breakdowns on trucks,” she said. “If we didn’t go and contract out with this company, we would have had to purchase new garbage trucks and equipment.”
MacQuarrie said that would require significant capital investment, while the contractor could run a better service for basically the same price.
She said she hopes this partnership will resolve collection issues of residents.
MacQuarrie said current waste management employees will be offered jobs with GFL, or moved to other municipal departments.
She said GFL reps will start solid waste collection April 1.
