A professor at StFX says rising tension in the Middle East, which led to the destruction of a passenger aircraft and the deaths of 57 people from our country, will strain Canada-US relations, but it likely won’t hurt the president at home.
Don Abelson, an expert in Canada-US relations and the founding director of the university’s Brian Mulroney Institute of Government, says how Donald Trump operates in the Middle East will affect how people think of him as commander-in-chief, but it won’t be a factor in the impeachment process.
Abelson tells The Hawk he doesn’t think most Americans consider escalation in the Middle East related to the ongoing proceedings.
“I don’t see what happened in Iran having a considerable impact,” he says. “In terms of the impeachment process, which as you know became an incredibly political and politically toxic process, I don’t think that is going to affect the outcome.”
Abelson says he has no doubt members of the US Senate will acquit Trump, and ultimately leave the decision up to American voters in the fall presidential election.
