The Port Hawkesbury YMCA is closing.
Members of the board of directors of the YMCA of Cape Breton say they’ve voted to close the branch Feb. 22.
They say they voted following an extensive review of the branch’s financial standing and increasing operational expenses.
Board reps say expenses continue to far outweigh revenue, and they can no longer afford to operate the branch.
In a release, Town of Port Hawkesbury CAO Terry Doyle says the town owns the bulk of the equipment in the gym and is focused on a developing a new operations plan for after Feb. 22.
They say members who pre-paid for monthly and yearly memberships will have their balance reimbursed in the coming weeks.
The Port Hawkesbury YMCA, which has roughly 500 members, has operated at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre since 2004.
