The Canada Revenue Agency has released a new section of their website that allows you to easily determine if you have any unclaimed money waiting for you.
Sign-in to your CRA account & navigate to the “My Account” section.
Click “Related Services” (on the right hand side) and look for the “Uncashed Cheques” option at the bottom. Any cheques that are uncashed and 6 months old or more will be there.
You will then see a link that says “Uncashed Cheques”
This potential money found here is from CRA cheques that you may have missed for some reason, dating back to the first time you filed your taxes.
If you do indeed have money waiting for you, fill out and submit a form (linked on the site) and those cheques will be re-sent or directly deposited.
So why isn’t the CRA re-sending those cheques? From what I understand, it’s because Government cheques don’t expire so they can’t void the original cheque and reissue a new one unless requested by the taxpayer – which is where that form comes in.
Check out this Twitter thread for some pretty awesome reports of this paying off nicely for a lot of people!
