COVID-19 has led to a suspension of North America’s oldest continuing weekly newspaper.
Officials with the SaltWire Network say they’ve made temporary changes to their operations in response to rapidly changing economic conditions.
They say they’ve suspended production of all of their weekly publications in our province and Newfoundland, effective immediately; that includes the Casket, which is based in Antigonish.
Company reps say they’ll produce only four daily publications, including the Chronicle Herald in Halifax and the Cape Breton Post, as they try to protect the long-term viability of their business; they’ve enacted a temporary layoff program impacting roughly 40 per cent of their staff members in the Atlantic region, as well as a reduced work week for remaining employees who earn above a certain amount.
They say no changes are being made to their flyer distribution network.
