Trick-or-treating is going ahead in the province despite COVID-19.
Municipal officials in the Town of Antigonish and Antigonish Co. have released guidelines for a safe Halloween; among them, a suggested time for trick-or-treating between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
After October’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said they want people to respect others’ right to choose.
“If people want to go out trick-or-treating with their children, by all means please do,” she said. “But when you do, please respect people’s decision whether they feel comfortable giving out treats or not.”
Boucher said town and county officials are following the advice of Dr. Robert Strang, the province’s chief medical officer of health, and other public health officials.
She said she hopes people understand Antigonish is normally a very generous community.
“The fact that somebody’s not giving out treats, I’m sure that it’s because they don’t feel comfortable, and not just because they don’t want to,” she said. “This is a different year for everything- all events- and Halloween is no different.”
Boucher said they have posters available for download and at town hall to indicate if you plan to give out candy.
