After months of waiting, a full inquiry into the mass shooting that shook Nova Scotia is underway.
Announced in July, the federal and provincial governments announced yesterday the Portapique Mass Shooting inquiry has begun, and announced their third Commissioner in charge.
Also announced was the third and final Commissioner to join the inquiry.
Toronto Lawyer Kim Stanton joins former Nova Scotia chief justice J. Michael MacDonald and former Fredericton police chief Leanne Fitch to lead the inquiry.
The commissioners will begin setting up their secretariat in Nova Scotia, where they will produce two reports – an interim report by May 1, 2022, and a final report by Nov. 1, 2022.
Those reports will grant a better insight into the facts and circumstances of the shooting, as well as help law enforcement prevent and prepare for similar incidents in the future, said a release on the announcement.
The commissioners will also have the power to call witnesses under oath and request documents and evidence from witnesses if deemed essential to the investigation.
The release said they will begin hiring support staff, creating their work plan and other tasks.
