The 2021 Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award is expanding.
The award typically has as many as four winners; there are 50 this time around, each of the province’s municipalities.
After March’s regular Antigonish Co. council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, said the real winners are the people.
“It’ll reside with the municipalities, but the real people and volunteers of our communities are the real winners of this award,” he said. “I think it’s nice that the province recognized the exceptional job people have done.”
The award was suspended in 2020.
McCarron said it was a difficult year for everyone, and this award is recognition.
“It highlights the great job that everyone has done in the Province of Nova Scotia during the pandemic.”
McCarron said spirit went beyond COVID-19.
He said we witnessed plenty of examples, from April’s mass shooting to other tragic events in the province.
