Canada Day celebrations in Antigonish won’t go forward in the usual way.
COVID-19 has led to the postponement of traditional events in the town and county for the second year in a row.
After last night’s regular Antigonish Co. meeting, Owen McCarron, the warden of the municipality, told The Hawk their staff members are working on some activities for later in the summer.
“I think people are looking for something,” he said. “We’re hoping that, with public health protocols loosening hopefully enough by that point, we’ll be able to have some sort of a celebration for folks to look forward to.”
McCarron said the news is disappointing.
He said everyone is excited for a return to the traditional festivities in 2022.
“It has been challenging for everyone,” he said. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area, we’ve survived very well, but nevertheless I think it’s important for people’s well-being that we get back to some normalcy.”
McCarron said some ideas for later in the summer include a concert and story book walks in different areas of the town and county.
He said officials will share more about their plans as they get closer.
