A beloved Halifax icon is bidding farewell to Nova Scotia.
Theodore Tugboat will embark on his journey to his new home at the Port of Hamilton in Ontario on Thursday.
Owner Blair McKeil announced the departure on Wednesday as part of a collaboration with one of the nation’s leading water education and conservation advocates, Swim Drink Fish.
A news release says Theodore will have an even bigger mandate now serving as the ambassador for the organization’s Great Lakes Guide, which aims to connect Canadians to the water and help them enjoy the outdoors in a sustainable way.
Plans are also in the works to have the tugboat advocate for employment in Canada’s marine and shipbuilding industry.
The tugboat will be converted to biodiesel when he arrives in Ontario as a way to further his role as a sustainability champion.
People will not be able to board the vessel when he stops at various ports of call during his voyage, but Canadians are encouraged to snap pictures while he is on open waters and docked in ports.
You can also download Vessel Finder to track his journey or follow #TheosGreatLakesAdventure on social media.
The 65-foot tugboat is a reproduction of the original TV character from the series “Theodore Tugboat”.
He was built at Snyder’s Shipyard in Dayspring, Nova Scotia in 2000.
