The Chair of the Mulgrave and Area Medical Centre said their recently completed Community Food Connections program was a rousing success.
10,000 free meals were delivered to over 200 seniors in communities from Mulgrave to Canso and Country Harbour to Marie Joseph from November to June.
Al England tells the Hawk it was a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“People were helped financially, people were somewhat isolated, people expressed anxiety as a result of COVID-19, reluctant to go too far from home.”
England said they were happy to help so many people.
He said it was a major achievement, in terms of the number of people supported.
“And certainly, based upon the valuation and the comments, the participants were quite happy with the program as well.”
England said it was what they could do to help during COVID-19, but now they’ll be transitioning back to their primary work, providing medical access for the area.
He said they’re not planning on running the program again unless there’s another serious spike in numbers, a fourth wave, and more government funding becomes available.
