Former Port Hawkesbury Town Councillor Trevor Boudreau claimed the Richmond riding on election night, gaining over 50% of the vote over runner up and Liberal candidate, Matt Haley.
Boudreau was reached Tuesday after his riding was called saying he felt the shift as the results came in to point to PC majority territory.
“We were feeling pretty good early on,” Boudreau said on reviewing some of the early returns, which he said helped underline what he was hearing during the campaign. “The conversations were real at the door, it wasn’t a three minute in-and-out, they were real conversations,” Boudreau said.
Boudreau said he kept hearing about improvements needed in provincial health care as a number one priority from those he met during canvasses going back as early as February.
“I was reaching out to people making sure I knew what the issues were and health care was the number one issue, and we’ve been talking about that since last August,” Boudreau said.
Alana Paon, the incumbent in the riding entering voting day, finished a distant third with 394 votes once all polls reported, running as an Independent after ouster for the PC Caucus in 2019.
Haley meanwhile finished second for the Liberals, still 764 votes off the winning count of 2773 for Boudreau. The NDP’s Bryson Syliboy received 266 votes, finishing fourth.
Voter turnout for the redrawn riding was over 71% according to polling data from Elections Nova Scotia.
