Major news outlets were quick to name the Liberals triumphant in the ridings of Cape Breton- Canso and Central Nova as votes rolled in from the federal election.
Incumbent Liberal candidate Mike Kelloway took Cape Breton-Canso, defeating his closest competitor, Conservative candidate Fiona MacLeod, the NDP’s Jana Reddick and Brad Grandy of the People’s Party of Canada.
Cape Breton Canso has been a Liberal stronghold for tears, with former MP Rodger Cuzner winning five consecutive elections by massive margins between 2004 and 2019. Mike Kelloway snagged the seat for the Liberals in 2019, defeating the Conservatives Alfie MacLeod by 1873 votes. Tonight’s win puts Kelloway into his second term.
“This job means so much to me because it means so much to the people. I want to continue that work and I think people got a sense of the authenticity, the work ethic, the focus on outcomes and the focus on engaging the electorate, not just during an election, but during the mandate that we had” Kelloway said, speaking with The Hawk on his win.
In Central Nova, incumbent Sean Fraser held onto his riding, beating out seven other candidates. Frasers closest competitor was Conservative candidate Steven Cotter
That riding touted a full slate of candidates on the ballot, including a candidate for the Communist Party of Canada and the satirical party dubbed the Rhinoceros Party, which promises not to keep any of its promises if elected.
Official vote counts aren’t in just yet, as there are still several thousand mail-in ballots to be counted for the two ridings.
