Nova Scotia’s Citizens on Patrol program is looking for volunteers.
Community members can apply to spend four hours a month patrolling their neighbourhood through the crime prevention initiative, taking notes on anything suspicious and reporting back to an RCMP liaison.
One Citizens on patrol group took their role even further and fundraised for a speed radar to pinpoint where drivers were speeding in their community, Constable Sonia Upshaw says.
“Then we knew which area in their community the vehicles were speeding in,” Upshaw says. “After having that data, we were able to… make some enforcement for speeding.”
To participate, you need to be at least 19 years old, hold a valid drivers licence and clean driving record, complete an interview and pass a security screening by the RCMP.
To volunteer, contact the RCMP at [email protected] with your name, address, phone number and nearest detachment.
