There are 4 communities in the running to win the Kraft Hockeyville contest this year & Sydney is one of them!
The others are in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. The winning community will be awarded $250,000 for arena upgrades and will host a NHL pre season game.
The winning community is determined by votes. Voting begins May 6 at 10am and the winner will be announced on May 7.
The Canada Games Complex in Sydney is the facility that is in the running. It was built in 1987 for that years winter games competition.
The Complex has since shut its doors to hockey. The organizers behind the Kraft Hockeyville nomination want to give girls hockey teams a place to play.
Winning Kraft Hockeyville would provide the Canada Games Complex with the required money to purchase a new compressor to put the ice back in and to reopen its doors for skaters. Reopening the Canada Games Complex would allow female hockey and other community groups to grow and flourish.
