The former Kamloops Indian Residential School had at least 215 unmarked graves of children discovered on the property on this day last year. An anthropologist from the University of Fraser Valley used ground penetrating radar to count the number of small graves.
This became the tip of a gruesome find for hundreds more across Canada.
Since then, more than 1700 graves have been discovered across the country and in total more than two thousand since the 70’s.
To honour survivors, their families and communities and to remember those children who did not return from Residential Schools.
Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are recognized on September 30th across Canada.
More on the school can be read here and on Wikipedia here for all former residential school findings in Canada.
