Owls Head is officially being named as Nova Scotia’s next provincial park.
Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton announced Tuesday that 266 hectares of Crown land will be protected at Little Harbour.
“The designation of this land as a provincial park is a clear indication of our promise to protect more land in Nova Scotia,” said Minister Rushton. “We are committed to transparency and giving the public an opportunity to provide input on how public lands are used, managed and protected.”
This comes months after public outcry foiled a plan to sell Owls Head to an American developer, Lighthouse Links, which wanted to build a golf course on the land.
Lighthouse Links penned a critical letter withdrawing their offer to buy and develop the land in November; however, the developer didn’t acknowledge community pushback as the reason.
The property boasts coastal barrens, three islands and wetlands which are home two species at risk: the piping plover and the barn swallow.
Under the Department of Natural Resources’ management, the public will be able to access the lands, but there won’t be any trails, parking areas or facilities.
