The Oceans Protection Plan is being renewed by the federal government.
As part of the plans next phase, over 384 million dollars in funding will be used to improve marine safety through existing initiatives
The funding announcement was made by, Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra and MP Mike Kelloway at NSCC’s Port Hawkesbury campus earlier today.
Kelloway says, efficient marine transportation means a vibrant economy and a healthy marine ecosystem for future generations.
The plan involves working with indigenous people to make marine shipping more efficient and to reduce the negative impact on marine ecosystems, ensuring the safe movement and navigation of vessels to improve safety on the water, investing in technologies to accommodate increasing marine traffic, training more students through the marine training program, and responding better to marine emergencies.
Since its launch in 2016, the Oceans Protection Plan has implemented 50 initiatives including the opening of six new Coast Guard stations.
