Canso’s Eastern Memorial Hospital has received some much-needed equipment. The Canso Lions Club and community members came together to purchase a new ultrasound machine for their ER. The machine was identified by the community as a need for the hospital, not only for providing diagnostic services but to attract health care professionals to come to the rural hospital. This ultrasound technology will make it easier for health care workers to make an effective and faster diagnosis in order to determine if patients need to be sent to a specialist.
The Lions Club contributed $10.000 to start the fundraising and more funding came from the Lions Club International Fund. Community members raised 50 percent of the machines cost, approximately $55.000 dollars. Additional funding raised was put aside for the purchase of more medical equipment in the future. “It’s truly a story of the local Lions Club tapping into Lions International for funds, we had support from the Antigonish Club in our application but also the community rallying behind the hospital to purchase this machine.” Says Canso Lion member Ray White. “We received a substantial donation from the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, we had hundreds of individual donations, the way people want to support this project is a demonstration of the support for hospital staff and the need to attract healthcare professionals to our area.”
Hospital staff were very happy to receive the new ultrasound machine. “It was really surprising at how many donations we received; this community is so good to support each other when people need something.” Say’s Hospital Administrative Assistant Julianne Myatt. She would like to thank the Lions Club and all the community members for their financial contributions.
