StFX Athletics inducted its new class into the StFX Sports Hall of Fame last night at an induction ceremony held in the Schwartz Auditorium. The Class of 2022 inductees included three athletes: Fred Perry (Basketball), Richard Karikari (Football), and Ghislaine Landry (Rugby), along with long time basketball coach Peter “Doc” Ryan, and the national champion 2010 StFX X-Womans Rugby squad in the team category.
X-Men Basketball standout Fred Perry from the class of 2001 was the first to be inducted. He is known as “The Smooth Assassin” by his teammates for playing the game in a smooth and quiet way. Perry was unable to attend the ceremony and was represented by his cousin and StFX football alumni Maurice Carvery.
X-Men Football star Richard Karikari from the class of 2005 was inducted by his former assistant coach Terry Chisholm. ” I haven’t known anyone who has exemplified the Xaverian spirit of sportsmanship and leadership better than Richard.” he said. Karikari spoke to those that attended the ceremony encouraging them to follow their destiny and their goals.
Ghislaine Landry, from the class of 2010 was recognized for her career with Rugby Canada. “When I started playing Rugby, I was just a kid and I loved the game.” she stated “Even with many sports in Canada in crisis right now, we’re all just kids who love the game, so if we could all just remember that it would be a legacy I would like to leave.”
Coach Peter “Doc” Ryan was inducted into the builder category and was recognized for his dedication and loyalty to the game of basketball. In his acceptance speech he told the crowd he had climbed quite a few mountain tops in his life and is still climbing up the mountainside with his heart and hands.
The Director of Athletics and Recreation Leo MacPherson inducted the 2010 X-Womans Rugby National Championship team. The squads Co Captain Courtney Malcom remarked “It took a lot of grit for our team to win that championship and that’s what we learned at StFX, it’s really great that we’re now able to bring that back to our communities, based on what we learned at X and what we learned together.”
Each inductee received their own official Hall of Fame photo and certificate from MacPherson and University President Dr. Andy Hakin. The evening ended with the singing of the StFX School song “Hail and Health”.
The StFX Sports Hall of Fame has honored people that contributed heavily to sports at the university since 1976
