A grant request from the Isle Madame Historical Society was brought to the attention of the Munciaplity of the County of Richmond at their regular meeting of council last week. The society needed the funding to cover maintenance costs to their facility located on the waterfront of Arichat.
Richmond County Warden, Amanda Mombourqutte says the historical society is a valued partner in Richmond County and the municipality wanted to support them in any way they could. “The reality is, are grant program funds for this fiscal year are getting pretty low, however we did at budget time last year approve an amount through a harbour front fund which would access our Canada Community Building Fund.” says Mombourquette. ” In order to access that fund, municipalities need to meet a certain criteria tourism and heritage infrastructure would be eligible, with the $50.000 we set aside for harbour front projects we decided this grant request from the Isle Madame Historical society would align well with that particular fund, so I am happy to say we were able to support the request.” $4.500 from this fund was approved for the historical society.
The funding would be used to make the facility more accessible so more people can visit the Centre and to make improvements to ensure it is protected from the elements. The retaining walls of the building and the front decks were determined to be unsafe and are in need of repairs.
