The Mulgrave Road Theatre is going green thanks to funding from the provincial government that was announced today.
The government is giving $500,000 to the theatre to help it renovate and expand the Former Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation building in Guysborough for their new location. The new spot will include top of the line environmentally friendly features, such as have solar heat, LED lighting, and energy efficient heating and cooling systems. It will also be designed to conserve water and will use solar energy to generate electricity.
“It’s going to allow them not to be just a cultural leader in the region, but also an environmental leader,” said Guysborough MLA Greg Morrow.
The theatre is receiving the funding through the Sustainable communities Challenge Fund, which is part of the Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, respond to climate change, transform how Nova Scotians produce and use energy, and make homes more energy efficient.
The $500,000 won’t cover the entire cost of the project. Morrow says the theatre will receive some federal funding as well.
The renovations to are expected to be completed by 2026. The Mulgrave Road theatre has been open for almost 50 years and has produced more than 75 new Canadian works.
