A national school lunch program is being welcomed by the province.
Education minister Becky Druhan says she’s pleased to hear the federal government is following through on their committment to support access to food in schools.
She says the province is excited to deliver their own universal school food program this fall.
“Phase one will ensure we have access to universal lunch programming across the province for our elementary school students. Having the federal government’s support in this is positive, and I’m looking forward to hearing more details,” said Druhan.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the one billion dollar program this week.
Druhan says they’ve been speaking with the federal department.
“I’ll be doing so again in the near future to find out how this program will support the work that we’re doing.”
Kids are going back to school this morning – but some of them won’t have enough to eat because money’s tight at home. Our National School Food Program is going to put healthy food on their plates and take the pressure off of parents. pic.twitter.com/BYOVW2GeY3
