A political science professor thinks the Progressive Conservatives defied gravity by gaining a super majority in Tuesday’s Nova Scotia provincial election.
Dr. Tom Urbaniak of Cape Breton University says incumbent governments tend to lose some support.
He adds the collapse of the Liberal party is another headline.
“Zach Churchill, even though he has considerable political experience as an MLA since 2010 and a senior cabinet minister, it was the fact that he didn’t have high profile among Nova Scotians,” said Urbaniak.
He adds Houston’s party ran effective attack ads on Churchill, comparing him to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Urbaniak says even though the NDP finished a distant second, they’ll build momentum for serious competition next time.
“They feel this is an opportunity to build out from their urban base over the next four years.”
Urbaniak believes it would backfire on the PC’s if they use their super majority to change proceedings at Province House.
