Are you familiar with the story of Mary Ellen’s Spook farm? Maybe you know the tale simply by the name Caledonia Mills or Fire Spook. Caledonia Mills is a community in Antigonish County that has long been associated with a mysterious story about unexplained fires & events.
Alexander and Mary MacDonald lived in a farmhouse there with their adopted teenaged daughter, Mary Ellen. In January of 1922, multiple fires broke out in their home that they couldn’t explain. It’s said that they would put one out and another would start for seemingly no reason. They even claimed wet towels would suddenly burst into flames. In all, they reported over 30 unexplained fires.
In addition to the fires, they also claimed other strange occurrences like ashes in milk and animals being moved in their barn.
A psychic investigator from Boston visited the farm and, depending on which story you read, either determined that Mary Ellen was being manipulated by a poltergeist or that spirits were somehow channeling through her. In the end, the family abandoned the home and moved away.
The farmhouse burnt down many years ago and now few traces of it remain.
The story will be told again, this time as a TV show. The Fire Ghost of Caledonia Mills will be released on January 8, 2025. Click here to learn more, the page has a lot of information on the story.
