A former Liberal MLA has been appointed to the Senate.
Allister Surette of West Pubnico, Yarmouth County was chosen by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Surette served as MLA of Argyle from 1993 to 1998, he was also the minister of Acadian Affairs and deputy house leader.
He was the former president and vice-chancellor of Universite Sainte-Anne in Digby County, a position he held until earlier this year.
Surette will sit as an independent.
