A Halifax Walmart has reopened after it was closed for several months following the tragic death of an employee at the Mumford Road location in October.
Although the store’s website has not been updated to show the location is open, a source told our newsroom they visited the store and bought some groceries Monday morning.
The Mumford Road location was closed after 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur was found dead inside a walk-in bakery oven in Oct. 19, 2024.
Her family told the Maritime Sikh Society that Kaur’s mother also worked at the store and was the one who first found Kaur in the oven.
The Maritime Sikh Society created a GoFundMe that raised nearly $200,000 for the family to help bring Kaur’s father and brother to Canada from India.
Halifax Regional Police determined the death was not suspicious after an investigation.
The company had started renovating the building prior to the tragic incident, and it appears much of the store has been renovated.
In November, Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss told our newsroom that they stopped renovating immediately after Kaur’s death, but the store resumed renovations after a few weeks.
They planned to remove the oven even before the incident as part of the renovations.
