It is being called a game-changer for the tourism industry.
WestJet will offer the first direct commercial flight between Sydney and Calgary this summer.
The Sydney Airport Authority met with WestJet and community stakeholders Wednesday to discuss the highly anticipated June launch of the service.
In a release, airport CEO Myles Tuttle calls the new route a significant milestone that enhances connectivity and creates new opportunities for tourism, business growth, and investment in Cape Breton. Tuttle adds, “Most importantly, it will allow more Cape Bretoners to spend valuable time with their families rather than enduring lengthy travel for work.”
CEO of Destination Cape Breton Terry Smith says, “WestJet’s new direct flight from Calgary to Cape Breton Island is a game-changer for our tourism industry. Improved air access is one of the most critical factors in growing our visitor economy, and this new route makes it easier than ever for travellers from Western Canada and beyond to experience the world-class beauty, culture and hospitality of Cape Breton Island.”
WestJet’s head of external affairs, Christina Iversen, says they’re excited about the two-way tourism opportunities the new route will bring. “The warm welcome we received was truly heartening, and we’re proud to strengthen our ties with the community through productive discussions about enhancing air access in the region.”
The flights will be on Tuesdays and Saturdays from June 10th to October 24th.
