An Eskasoni woman has made history by being the first Indigenous person to win a famous beauty pageant.
Magan Basque won the title of Miss Canada United World 2023, May 14 and wants to use her win to create change and inspire young indigenous women.
The 24-year-old told Saltwire,“I want to really just show everyone in the Indigenous community that if you’re passionate about something, you should follow your dreams,” Basque said.
This Thursday and Friday she will appear at Miss Sipekne’katik as a mentor.
“For me to compete in these pageants is a really big deal, especially while living on a reserve where we all have this generational trauma. I think it’s really important to end the cycle and just be an inspiration like this to show people on a reserve you can do anything you set your mind to,” Basque added.
With her win, she will make 15 appearances across the country and compete for Miss United World in Texas, in September.
