The Atlantic premiers are asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for an immediate meeting on to discuss what they consider a disproportionate impact of the federal government’s new clean fuel standards on Atlantic Canadians.
The premiers met virtually on Wednesday with federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Stephen Guibault. They sought options to reduce the impact of implementing the clean fuel standards.
They’re now turning to the prime minister to ask for an immediate pause until further analysis can be completed on the impact the regulation changes will have.
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia opposition leader Zach Churchill released a statement saying that this move by Premier Houston is too little too late.
“Just like he did with the carbon tax, Premier Houston is acting at the eleventh hour and blaming the federal government for his failure to collaborate on behalf of Nova Scotians,” said Churchill.
He says that Houston should introduce his own affordability measures to mitigate the financial burden the clean fuel standards will cause.
The standards will come into effect on July 1st.
