For the first time in 15 years, SAERC has a girls hockey team.
They’ll play their first game Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Dalbrae at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.
The school combined with East Antigonish Education Centre to form the squad.
Head Coach Lance Hawley says there’s a lot of excitement.
“In the school and in the community. We’ve had lots of messages of support. The girls are excited, and to play for a team that hasn’t been around for a long time,” said Hawley.
He says women’s hockey is on the rise, and the players have great role models to look up to.
“You’re seeing more and more players take the next step after high school, whether it’s university or the new PWHL. They are great role models, and we’re seeing it now in minor hockey programs with more girls joining and more teams coming in.”
The team plays Inverness on Thursday, with Regionals and Provincials coming up next month.
