More than $5 million for water and wastewater upgrades in Antigonish.
The province will invest $2.84 million, with an additional coming $2.84 million from the Town of Antigonish and the Municipality of the County of Antigonish.
The money will go toward extensions and upgrades to new affordable housing developments and the sewage treatment plant.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Michelle Thompson, on behalf of Housing Minister John Lohr, says as Antigonish continues to grow and thrive we need to have the wastewater and water capacity to support the development.
“You may not notice water and wastewater projects when you walk through a community. But to build more housing, to build medical clinics and attract the professionals we need to staff them, we need water and wastewater. These are critical projects for the future of our community.”
The funding breakdown is:
– priority housing water and sewer, Antigonish County – $127,540 from both the Municipal Capital Growth Fund and the Municipality of the County of Antigonish
– Antigonish sewage treatment plant screening system and headworks – $2.71 million from the Municipal Capital Growth Fund, $1.8 million from the Town of Antigonish and $903,507 from the Municipality of the County of Antigonish
– the Municipal Capital Growth Program, announced in February, was designed to respond to the infrastructure needs of municipalities and addresses critical issues such as housing, climate change, accessibility and growth
The projects are part a historical provincial investment in municipal infrastructure, through the Municipal Capital Growth Program- a one-time $102-million investment in projects across Nova Scotia.
