You can never be over prepared before heading into the woods or for a hike on a nearby trail.
Halifax Search and Rescue (HSAR) crews are crediting a hiker for his planning after he ended up lost in the Peggy’s Cove area.
Search teams were called in Thursday night to help find him, and fortunately for all involved, the hiker was quickly located in thick brush about a half kilometre into the woods.
The rescue took about two hours from start to finish but it’s the hikers preparedness that is being celebrated.
According to HSAR, the hiker had a high visibility jacket, noise signalling device, light, survival blanket, water, and a charged cellphone.
“His preparation helped make for a quick and comfortable rescue,” stated HSAR in a Facebook post. “This is a good reminder to always be prepared, as nobody plans to become lost, but a little preparation goes a long way if do.”
No injuries were reported and everyone went home safely.
Hike Nova Scotia has some tips on its website to help making hiking safe and enjoyable:
- Don’t hike alone. There is safety in numbers.
- Make a hike plan. Decide where you’re going and when you’ll return. Leave this information with someone who will follow up if you don’t return on time.
- Take a map and compass or GPS unit (with extra batteries) and know how to use them.
- Bring the right gear with you and be prepared. Hiking or trekking poles are a good idea to help with difficult terrain and can be tools for emergency situations, such as fending off aggressive animals.
- Never feed wild animals and don’t leave garbage behind that might attract them to the trail.
They also offer courses or workshops to improve outdoor skills and stay safe while hiking.
