It’s Halloween, and the RCMP say they have a few tips to keep kids safe Thursday.
Cpl. Jennifer Clarke says it’s potentially dangerous any time cars and kids are in the same place.
Clarke tells The Hawk kids might not being paying attention in all the excitement of the night.
“We’re asking motorists to pay extra attention, particularly in more dense residential areas,” she says. “Keep in mind this is a night that’s very special for a lot of kids and a lot of families, so it’s very important to pay a little bit extra attention if you’re out and about on Halloween night.”
Clarke says you should make sure your kids are visible with bright-coloured costumes, reflective strips or glow sticks- anything that makes it easer for drivers to see them.
She says high visibility will help keep them safe.
“They might be a little resistant to putting bright colours or reflective types of things on their costumes,” she says. “It’s really important we encourage them to do that.”
Clarke says it’s a good idea to remind your little ghost or goblin to be safe around cars.
“Despite the fact that it’s Halloween, and it’s sort of a candy-driven free for all for some kids, it’s very important to remember the rules of the road,” she says. “Always watch for cars pulling out of driveways and backing up.”
Clarke says you should remind them not to eat any treats until you’ve had a chance to check them.
Trick-or-treating in the Town of Port Hawkesbury takes place from 5-8 p.m.; no masks are allowed after 8 p.m., and a 10 p.m. curfew is in effect for anyone younger than 16.
