The crown attorney in the case of two former StFX football players charged with sexual assault says, the complainant is understandably upset with a not guilty verdict.
Alicia Kennedy spoke to reporters outside of court in Antigonish after the verdict was handed down Wednesday.
Kennedy said the woman showed incredible bravery.
“When the judge finished reading his verdict the complainant collapsed in the courtroom,” she said. “She has explained something that happened to her that was very difficult and traumatic, and then, in a sense, she’s had that reality denied.”
Kennedy said the crown’s evidence was presented as fairly and completely as possible.
She said the woman followed the process to the end.
“She was subject to cross examination that was prolonged; it was about graphic details of her personal life,” she said. “She is a very brave, brave young woman.”
Kennedy said the judge found a reasonable doubt, based on his credibility and reliability findings, as to whether or not there was consent.
