Port Hawkesbury town councillors say they’re considering changing the ownership of their airport.
They approved a motion to allow Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, to explore partnerships with their counterparts in other local municipalities and First Nations for ownership of the Allan J. MacEachen Regional Airport at December’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night.
After the meeting, Chisholm-Beaton said town officials have held the deed since the onset, but conversations regarding governance and ownership have come up recently.
“It is certainly an idea that has been expressed at our airport committee table, that we should look at alternate models of ownership that better reflect the function of that air asset,” she said. “Is ownership an effective potential tool to position the airport for success?”
Chisholm-Beaton said this isn’t the first time the idea has been entertained, but changing ownership is now being formally explored.
