Town councillors in Mulgrave say heavy trucks can’t pass through the town until their main street bridge is replaced.
Officials with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal have diverted the traffic through Monastery and Boylston, along Hwy. 344, to the port in response.
After November’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Ron Chisholm, the newly-elected mayor of Mulgrave, said the bridge can’t hold the fully-loaded trucks in its current state.
“It’s the trucks for the boats on the wharf- the Clearwater boats- they were planning on pulling out if they couldn’t get their fuel trucks here,” he said. “They couldn’t go across the bridge- the fuel trucks are b-trains, they couldn’t make it to turn around in through the town, even they did come up the back streets.”
Chisholm said the only other routes through the town are residential.
He said it’s a serious safety issue to have trucks coming through residential areas, and it’s not acceptable.
“This is a small town with some small kids,” he said. “A lot of our houses are pretty much built on the edge of the road, so we don’t want to see a tragedy- these guys (have) got to realize it’s a residential area.”
Chisholm said he’s been told the bridge will be replaced in 2021.
He said he hasn’t seen the bridge on any official infrastructure list yet.
