Fiona MacLeod has announced that she’ll be tossing her hat in the ring when the next federal election is called.
MacLeod will represent the federal Conservative Party in the riding of Cape Breton-Canso.
While this will be MacLeod’s first time running for election, she says her long career within Canada’s federal departments, House of Commons and Senate, have taught her the ins and outs of how government works.
That knowledge makes her well-positioned to help implement Erin O’toole’s federal Conservative Party’s five-point plan, she says.
“[That plan] will benefit Cape Bretoners in terms of growing their economy, providing them with greater mental health and physical health support and ensuring that moving forward accountability of government and ethics of government is enhanced,” MacLeod says. “And if we ever have a pandemic like this again, we’ll be ready for it.”
In talking with people in the riding, MacLeod says, she’s heard a number of recurring concerns, including reliable access to internet and cell service and lack of affordable housing.
MacLeod, who lives in Dunvegan, says she’s excited about the possibility of representing the communities of Cape Breton-Canso in Ottawa.
While no federal election has been called yet, there are rumblings of a fall election as the current minority Liberal government nears the two-year mark of it’s mandate.
MacLeod will be out talking to people in the riding over the next week, and says she’s excited about the opportunity to represent the communities of Cape Breton-Canso in the nation’s capital, and to report back to constituents.
“It’s really important to make sure that all parts of this riding have an awareness, an opportunity to be aware of what you’re doing throughout your mandate and how that is developing,” She says. “And equally, circling back to update them on what you’ve done [and] tweak what your plan is for delivering for this community.”
