The CAT ferry is returning to the water, but not for passengers just yet.
Between October 23 and 27, the ferry will return to Bar Harbor, Maine, then Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, for regulatory certification of crew members, technical trials and in dock testing.
Bay Ferries says residents of both Yarmouth and Bar Harbor will see the ferry enter and exit their ports during both the day and night multiple times as part of the training and certification.
Bay Ferries has announced the CAT will return for the 2022 season. While operating, it will be based and supplied in Yarmouth.
During the operating season, the ferry will depart Yarmouth in the morning and return in the early evening.
A contract between the province and Bay Ferries for the ferry service runs through the 2025 operating season.
The CAT has not sailed since the summer of 2018. Construction on the Bar Harbor ferry terminal cancelled service in 2019, while the pandemic shuttered the ferry in 2020 and 2021.
