The President of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish has tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement released Sunday night, Andy Hakin explained over the past few days three members of the school’s leadership team, including himself, tested positive for the virus.
“I was notified of my positive status Saturday evening. We are all fully vaccinated and experiencing mild flu-like symptoms. All Public Health protocols are being followed and we are able to work virtually while we isolate. The focus of our team remains on supporting our students and our community,” Hakin wrote in a Facebook post.
As of Sunday afternoon, there are 125 students isolating, 26 of whom are within residence.
Meantime, Hakin confirmed classed will resume as planned on Janurary 4.
“A number of questions have been received regarding writing exams in January. First, please be aware that there is no change in the original return to campus date. Also, I want students and faculty to know that time will be dedicated to finishing exams before the new academic term begins. The Academic Leadership Team guided by the AVP & Provost is currently working through details. They will be sharing additional information in the days ahead,” said Hakin.
Hakin also issued an apology over the weekend for the school’s role in the COVID-19 spike.
He says the community needs to be prepared for the number of infections to spike in the coming days.
The outbreak has been attributed to the university’s X-ring ceremony and graduation events over a week ago.
